Jan Dintheer grew up in the Thun region of Switzerland and began making music at an early age, discovering the electric guitar at twelve. After exploring metal and indie music, he found his artistic home in jazz. He studied at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Guitar in 2019 and a Master of Arts in Jazz Composition in 2022.
Dintheer founded the Jan Dintheer Large Ensemble during his master’s studies and was influenced by teachers such as Django Bates. In 2022, he received the Cultural Promotion Prize of the City of Thun. Alongside jazz works, he has composed for string quartet, interdisciplinary projects, and various commissioned contexts. As a performer, he has appeared internationally, including with the hybrid pop band alpha-ray.
Now based in Bern, Dintheer is known for conceptually driven compositions that treat the large ensemble as a single, organic sound body, balancing structural refinement with musical soul.
